Project ASAil

ASAil is Aalto Space Association's solar sail satellite project, competing in EarthCup Race 1: the first race in a series whose long-term ambition is to develop the technologies needed for solar-sailing missions toward the Sun–Earth L1 point and, ultimately, space-based approaches to mitigating global warming. Solar sails use the pressure of sunlight itself as propulsion, allowing spacecraft to maneuver without consuming propellant. In Race 1, ASAil will bring this technology to Low Earth Orbit, developing and demonstrating a lightweight deployable sail, attitude control, communications and autonomous navigation in the harsh environment of VLEO.

But ASAil is about more than winning a race. It is about demonstrating what a student-built spacecraft team can achieve. Students at Aalto are designing the spacecraft, developing its hardware and software, testing its systems and preparing it for flight. The mission will turn theoretical solar-sailing physics into real engineering data and experience, creating the technological foundation for increasingly ambitious missions beyond Earth.
